This is documentation of a physical unboxing of the first generation Olio Gold smartwatch product. This is the product I have designed while I was the head designer at Olio, a San Fransisco based startup pursuing luxury smart watches.

The main identifying features of this version that I was particularly proud of were, the engraved & grooved bezel, the clean chamfered arms, the stacked conical base & the visible copper induction coil behind the glass on the back side.

The stacked conical base was used to advert the eyes of the true thickness of the watch and its components. The inward conical feature visually raises the watch off the wrist to make it appear thinner and lighter on the wrist.

The engraved & grooved texture of the bezel was the solution to handling the dead space of the display. The grooved lines visually break the dead space by adding controlled reflections into the piece to give it finer detail where other smart watches in this time period do not celebrate and leave blank. The grooved forms were inspired by intaglio engraving techniques as seen on currency.

The gently transitioning arms are chamfered & then polished to enhance the gracefulness of the body, also another visual method of adverting the eye from the large proportions of the internals. During this time period, most other smartwatches suffer from neo-modernism & minimalism leaving the Olio watch a more graceful object when compared to harsher geometric shapes seen in the market.

Near field induction charging is quite common and is barely celebrated in our products. So common that it is seen in just about all electric toothbrushes during this time period. Induction charging in smartwatches is to be expected. In this design, the common induction coil is celebrated for the first time as a jewel like feature.
